You’ll be based in the city of Tena, affectionately known as the "Cinnamon City". Located at 1,600 feet above sea level, Tena is considered selva alta, or high jungle, and is located on the eastern slopes of the Andes that descend into the Amazon rainforest. Its unique location gives Tena a comfortable climate and it the perfect place to experience both Andean and Amazonian culture.
Our staff will pick you up at the airport in Quito and take you to a hostel where you will spend the first three days starting an in-depth orientation covering local business etiquette, health and safety, cultural norms, and Spanish language classes. As a part of your orientation we'll visit historic sites in and around Quito. We'll then travel to Tena where we will finish our orientation by showing you around the city of Tena, getting you familiar with its public transportation system and introducing you to the host organization of your internship. You will then work full-time at your internship for the next six weeks. During that time, we’ll go on a couple of excursions that include visits to some exciting natural attractions, learn about the Amazon and connect with local community activists while building new friendships.
