Ecuador - Ecotourism

Dates: June 13 - July 31, 2010

Tuition: $5,395

Duration: 7 weeks  (1 week orientation, 6 weeks internship)

Location:  Tena, Ecuador

Join a group of other interns dedicated to making a difference in Ecuador.  You will arrive in Quito and have a chance to explore the capital.  You will then be off to Tena.  After a week of intensive orientation, you will work full-time at your internship for the next six weeks.

Tena is located just west of the the Amazon rainforest and is an exciting mix of a growing industrialized center and focal point for adventure tourism for jungle, kayaking and rafting tours in the region.

Ecotourism, sustainable tourism, and responsibly managed tourism can be a positive force for conservation of the environment and sustainable development in Ecuador, improving the local quality of life in the communities.

Internships in the Ecotourism field have the real potential to make a big difference to a remote rural community in the Amazon that needs your skills, knowledge, advice, initiative and enthusiasm.

An outsider will invariably have a different way of viewing many issues when compared with the locals and their opinions and traditions. Your role in this program is to help the locals to see from another point of view. It does not mean that you have to make them feel as their ideas were incorrect or bad but as a traveler and visitor you might be able to see things in a different way to reach and meet the wishes of tourists in an ecological way.

This internship involves working on the development and implementation of a framework for creating successful community-based ecotourism projects and a system for monitoring project progress. It will involve a mixture of office and field work.

The idea is that participants will help creating ideas and projects as well as building on existing projects to keep the program moving forward as much as possible.

This means that interns will work together with the community to make sure that everybody is doing what they should to help to maintain what they have.  Interns may also work in smaller groups to develop ideas for new projects.

English-speaking Interns can also do a great deal by translating information to be used on signs to inform foreign visitors, help with a web page or prepare website content, look for and contact agencies so they can learn about what they can see in the community etc.

Some experience or education within the eco-tourism or similar recommended.

Intermediate Spanish recommended.

Interest in working with people and to learn new things.

You, our staff and the other interns live together in a house just outside of Tena. Our home-base is a secure compound with an eating area, a small yard and a living room. You’ll share a room with two or three other interns and have a private bathroom and shower . In the mornings you can take the local bus into town to go to work.

Breakfast will be served every day, but lunches are on your own. Most interns will eat at their workplace or will sometimes be invited to eat out with their co-workers. Dinner is served from Monday to Thursday, but not on Friday, Saturday or Sunday; this allows you to explore local restaurants or travel on the weekends.
