Ecuador - Journalism internship

Dates: June 13 - July 31, 2010

Tuition: $5,395

Duration: 7 weeks  (1 week orientation, 6 weeks internship)

Location:  Tena, Ecuador

Join a group of other interns dedicated to making a difference in Ecuador.  You will arrive in Quito and have a chance to explore the capital.  You will then be off to Tena.  After a week of intensive orientation, you will work full-time at your internship for the next six weeks.

Tena is located just west of the the Amazon rainforest and is an exciting mix of a growing industrialized center and focal point for adventure tourism for jungle, kayaking and rafting tours in the region.

This program gives journalism students the opportunity to work in a professional news organization, either in print, broadcast or online journalism.

Interns normally start working alongside one of the full time staffers until she or he gets accustom to the requirments of the job.  Interns will then have a chance to work independently at least part time to come up with ideas for stories, gather information, take photos and etc that culmulnates in a complete article ready for publication.

Everything an intern submits will be checked and edited by the news organization.  Most interns have gotten at least one article published by the newspaper.

The program encourage interns to work independently, but in cooperation with the rest of the staff as they will be able to gain first-hand experience with experienced reporters.

The journalism internship takes place in Tena however there may be some opportunities to travel to other cities to cover stories for a day or two. If you choose to travel, local transportation and lodging costs are at the expense of the intern.

Some basic recommendations for this internship are:

  • Some experience or education within the journalism field recommended
  • Intermediate Spanish recommended
  • Interest in working with people and to learn new things
  • Open-mindedness to work and live in a different culture

Working hours are 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday however this is flexible and also depends on if the intern wants to cover a story or event that takes place at night or in the weekend etc.

What to bring:

  • A laptop, USB memory and camera is highly recommended.  Interns may have to share a computer with another staff member
  • Semi formal clothing (not always demanded but may be necessary for meetings as a representive of the news organization

You, our staff and the other interns live together in a house just outside of Tena. Our home-base is a secure compound with an eating area, a small yard and a living room. You’ll share a room with two or three other interns and have a private bathroom and shower . In the mornings you can take the local bus into town to go to work.

Breakfast will be served every day, but lunches are on your own. Most interns will eat at their workplace or will sometimes be invited to eat out with their co-workers. Dinner is served from Monday to Thursday, but not on Friday, Saturday or Sunday; this allows you to explore local restaurants or travel on the weekends.
