Ecuador- Medical Internships

Dates: June 13 - July 31, 2010

Tuition: $5,395

Duration: 7 weeks  (1 week orientation, 6 weeks internship)

Location:  Tena, Ecuador

Join a group of other interns dedicated to making a difference in Ecuador.  You will arrive in Quito and have a chance to explore the capital.  You will then be off to Tena.  After a week of intensive orientation, you will work full-time at your internship for the next six weeks.

Tena is located just west of the the Amazon rainforest and is an exciting mix of a growing industrialized center and focal point for adventure tourism for jungle, kayaking and rafting tours in the region.

The medical internship will be performed in Tena's major regional hospital.

Interns will work side by side with the doctors and the nurses in the clinic/hospital. Normally it takes a couple of days or a week to get to know the staff, the work and to get familiar with the clinic or hospital environment.  Doctors and nurses typically will want to get to know the intern before they start to give them more tasks that they can do by themselves. In this way it`s hard for a quiet and shy participant to get to do things sometimes.

Participants also need to be awake and show their interest, ask questions, ask what they can do to help, ask how to do things, ask what’s wrong with a patient etc. If they don’t have too many patients in the emergency where they might be at the moment but they see a long line of patients in another department, show interest and ask if they can help there instead of just standing against the wall.

Depending on what patients there are etc they might help with taking vital signs, remove stitches, get records for incoming patients, fill in new records for patients, give shots, give vaccinations, assist in operations etc. In some locations the hospital have programs to visit different communities in the area to help people with a check up, first aids and to talk about hygiene etc and participants might join the doctors and nurses on this.

Hospitals and clinics in Ecuador still lack a lot of equipment and therefore they also work different in the way that there are not always machines to just plug in to get blood pressure, oxygen level etc so this has to be done manually but it can vary a lot form hospital to hospital as well as between different departments as the health care system is under a lot of changes with the current President.

Medical internships include working directly with nurses and involvement with operations. Interns will gain exposure to several areas including

Surgery

Pediatrics

Emergency Room

Obstetrics

You, our staff and the other interns live together in a house just outside of Tena. Our home-base is a secure compound with an eating area, a small yard and a living room. You’ll share a room with two or three other interns and have a private bathroom and shower . In the mornings you can take the local bus into town to go to work.

Breakfast will be served every day, but lunches are on your own. Most interns will eat at their workplace or will sometimes be invited to eat out with their co-workers. Dinner is served from Monday to Thursday, but not on Friday, Saturday or Sunday; this allows you to explore local restaurants or travel on the weekends.
